San Francisco voters in November will be asked to weigh in on what was until now a private family matter: male circumcision.
As San Francisco voters head to the polls Nov. 8 to decide who should serve as the next mayor of The City, they will also decide whether to ban male circumcision.
The San Francisco Department of Elections officially ruled Tuesday that there were enough signatures gathered to place the measure on the ballot. On April 26, San Francisco resident Lloyd Schofield had dropped off 12,265 signatures to place the measure on the ballot. He needed 7,168 valid signatures.
If approved by voters it would amend The City’s police code “to make it a misdemeanor to circumcise, excise, cut or mutilate the foreskin, testicle or penis of another person who has not attained the age of 18.”
Doing so would result in a fine of up to $1,000 and up to one year in jail.
Opponents have blasted the measure for being a violation of religious freedoms.
